1st Annual Polar Bear Dip
and Chili Challenge
They couldn't have picked a better day for a polar bear dip. Saturday, January 9
temperatures were well below freezing, the sun was bright and there was no wind.  Just
after noon, Phil Smith, member of the Crystal Beach Business Improvement Area and
co-organizer of the event, signaled the beginning  of the First Annual Crystal Beach BIA
Polar Bear Dip and Chili Challenge.  And a couple of dozen hearty souls jumped into
Lake Erie a
t the Bertie Boating Club boat ramp. They were soon followed by wave after
wave of fellow dippers, each trying to score three dips for a chance at a prized special
hoodie.  Later, they warmed up in a portable hot tub and joined the crowd at the tasting
of the chili prepared by cheftestants hoping to bag the trophy for the best. For $5.00,
spectators were able to taste and vote, while dippers got to vote as part of their entry
fee.  There were bins available for donations to C.O.P.E.'s food bank and a 50/50 draw
also raised funds for the service that has been stretched due to hard economic times.
Kudos to the organizers and everyone who came out.  Crystal Beach is happening -
even in the winter!
I Got My Three Dips Done!
Phil Smith congratulates dippers while they enjoy the hot tub.
Early Birds Lynne (L) from Chippawa and
couple Christine and Mike are signed up
and ready to jump in the lake.  For Lynn,
this is a return trip after a two year hiatus.
The original Polar Bear Dip/Chili Challenge
was part of the Fort Erie Winterfest which
was closed down after six years.  For
Christine, it was a first-time experience,
while hubby Mike will stand by with towels
and warm clothes.  What a dip!
